We Love DTLA, Even If It Doesn't Love Us Back
Hi, My name is Holiday Kirk and I live in the historic core of DTLA.
To most Angelenos, DTLA is a joke. It's the place nobody goes, it's a dirty, decript excuse for a downtown. It's an embarrassment with no parking. It's so unloved that the domain for this website cost me $16. Do you know how much the domain for "welovenewyork.com" costs? $3,299.
None of the nasty things your average Angeleno says about DTLA is true (well, except for the no parking bit), DTLA is a hub of culture and energy. It's the most walkable part of Los Angeles if you're tough enough. Sure, there's a lot of homeless people but those homeless people are our neighbors and they deserve respect. From the Fulton Market to Little Tokyo to all our amazing bars and resteraunts DTLA is like someone sliced a couple of blocks out of New York City and dropped it somewhere with great weather.
I rarely meet anybody that agrees with me. But I love this place, it's a place with problems but it's a place worth fighting for. This brand is called "We Love DTLA" instead of "I Love DTLA" because I want to prove that there are more people out there like me, who love DTLA for all its flaws not in spite of them.
For now 'We Heart DTLA" is just a simple merch operation. Some clothing you can wear with pride. But I'm dreaming of a future where we can do community outreach programs, pop up events, charity drives. I want to grow this into a place people can point to when they want to take DTLA seriously.
But that all takes money. So for now I hope you see a tee shirt or two you like. And I hope to see you downtown wearing it.
Thank you for your time, Kirk.
